I would think it was in 1898 at the start of the Spanish- American War. I have a photo of NYS National Guard members breaking camp and they still have there rolling block rifles. The photo is dated 1895. There was just a photo on ebay of a National Guard member with his rifle and it was dated Dec. 4...

NYS Rolling Block Rifle

Hi Ed, It is possible that the butt stock is a replacement for a broken one on an issued rifle. I have a photo of Company D, 12 Regiment, New York Nationl Guard taken on Aug.23, 1892 at a Buffalo, NY railroad yard with the soldiers in front of the railroad car and some of them are standing on top...

Ed, Thanks for the information. It could be a commercially made New York State Model rifle. It does lack the inspection marks on the stock ( H.B.H. and SNY) that a normally found on the right and left side of the stock just in back of the receiver. But this gun was sold to New York State, on the ...

The middle barrel band from the rifle is not interchangable with the rolling block carbine. NYS Model #5 Rolling Block Test Rifle

In George Layman's book The Military Rolling Block Rifle, revised fourth edition on page 102, he states that in 1897 a very small number of No. 5 Remington's were purchased by the State of New York for testing. Ironically in lieu of the national service caliber of .30 U.S. Krag, this lot was chamber...

1867 Navy Carbine

The Navy carbine would of had the serial number stamped on the left side of the barrel, just above the wood of the forearm and just in front of the reciever. The serial numbers should of been from 0-5000. The Navy cabine that I have in my collect has a serial number in the 4000 range, I also have a ...
