Re: Need help identifying - Rolling block saddle-ring carbin

I "lucked" into one of those in early 1987 except that mine was not marked "11 MANN". Got it home from the gun show and slipped an 11mm Spanish cartridge into the chamber. The Spanish cartridge kind of got lost in there. Made a chamber cast and....11 mm Mannlicher. This is the on...

Re: help identifing please

Unknown from your photos what caliber it is now but, it started "life" as a .58 caliber "transformed" rifle (made up from left over Civil War muskets). Later, they were new made with new parts. The clue is the breech block. That second hole you see along side the firing pin hole ...

Re: Barrel Band Markings

The only thing I can add is that the 10.6 on the bottom of the barrel indicates 11mm Spanish cartridge. 11.1 would indicate the 11mm Egyptian cartridge.

Re: Saddle ring carbine identification

An educated guess would be that your carbine is chambered for the Egyptian cartridge. The Egyptian and Beaumont cartridges are so similar that cartridge collectors have difficulty telling them apart without a head stamp and many early cartridges were not head stamped. The importance of early militar...

Re: "French Model" Rolling Block?

Just as well with COTW (Barnes). It has LOTS of errors. I randomly picked 6 cartridges I listed neck measurements in a previous post and measured the base diameter: .522", .512", .525", .518", .521", .514". As you can see tolerances in the late 1800s were nothing like w...

Re: "French Model" Rolling Block?

Not necessarily. A virgin case (never loaded ie. a new Bertram) would need to be expanded to accept a .439" bullet (considered standard for the 11mm Spanish). I made the following neck measurements from some factory loaded 11mm Spanish cartridges. Spanish mfg: .461", .460", .458"...

Re: "French Model" Rolling Block?

You'd be far better off making a chamber cast. A .42 Berdan cartridge will fit an 11mm Spanish chamber quite nicely because the two cartridges have almost identical rim and base measurements. However, an 11mm Spanish will NOT chamber in the Berdan rifle as the bullet is of larger diameter therefore ...

Re: Weird Carbine

David,
Made in Spain. If the third symbol on the breech with a star over it is an "S" then it was made in 1948. I have two Spanish-made rolling blocks in .44-40 in slightly different configurations. One of them shoots extremely well.

Re: Leige Egyptian 11.1 ammo

Old toys CAN be expensive. But, the cases will last as long as the rifle. Rolling Blocks are the easiest rifle to make a chamber cast. Remove the block and hammer, clean the chamber, plug the bore with a stout patch and pour in the cerosafe. I use the 11mm Mauser bullet mould (.446") for the Eg...

Re: Leige Egyptian 11.1 ammo

Looking thru my Rolling Block info on my rifles/muskatoons/carbines, I'm going to make a fairly educated guess that your rifle is chambered for the 11mm Egyptian cartridge. I have one Egypt rifle made by Remington but rebarreled in Belgium and it has the "11.1" on the bottom of the barrel....

Re: Model 4 Help w/ pics..

Your rifle is of Belgian manufacture. The markings on the left side of the barrel are Belgian proof marks and inspector marks. Some of these will also be on the left side of the receiver. I believe I can make out one of them in the photos. Belgian and Spanish arms makers made LOTS of No 4 knockoffs ...

Re: .58 Berdan RRB

Steve,
I have to expand the case mouth slightly to seat the bullet. I was giving you an idea of what the fired case diameter would be, therefore a closer look at chamber dimensions, without the expander plug influence.

Re: .58 Berdan RRB

Steve, Ed's measurements are very close to what George Hoyem gives in his "The History and Development of Small Arms Ammunition Volume 2" for the .58 Roberts, 1870: bullet diameter: .612"; rim dia.: .741", head (base) dia.: .656"; case mouth: .610"; case length: 1.37&qu...

Re: .58 Berdan RRB

Steve, Looks like Ed has pretty much answered your questions. For what its worth, I made chamber casts of my chambers before I made cases. Once the cases are made I don't have any use for the #s anymore. So, I have measured my chambers now similar to how you have done it. Both chambers measure about...

Re: .58 Berdan RRB

Steve, With my loads I'm getting 3" to 3 1/4" groups at 50 yards. Not great but the sights are crude and I am a plinker, not a group shooter. I live in the desert and am satisfied with minute-of-smallish rock or bush at 250-300 yards. For cases I'm using Bertram 577-500 trimmed down. I bou...
