Re: 8mmx58r Brass Cases - how do I make them ?
Hi There, 2 dollars a case isn't all that exorbitant for cartridge cases that have to be formed. I don't own a Swedish RB (yet) in that caliber but someday I might. I do have a couple of "Rollers" in 43 Spanish that I shoot and I bought brass from "Track Of The Wolf" that cost $3...

Re: What Can Someone Tell Me about THIS Rifle ?
Hi There, You have done much more research into the 8x58R than I have (which is good). I was unaware of a loading specific to the rolling block. It would be interesting to know what the pressure spec.s for that load were. Still, I think one should be very conservative when using one of these old act...

Re: What Can Someone Tell Me about THIS Rifle ?
Hi There, The Crown C on the barrel does stand for the Carl Gustav factory. The letters below that are the initials of the inspectors that approved the work. These do use the Danish Krag Jorgensen 8mm round (8x58R). Although these were re-heat treated and new beach blocks and hammers installed, the ...

Re: What Can Someone Tell Me about THIS Rifle ?
Hi There, What you have is a "sporterized" Swedish rolling block. Some of the Swedish rolling blocks were updated by re-heat treating the actions, fitting a new breach block and hammers and re-barreling them to 8x58mmR. These were known as the 1867/89 model. This was a stop gap measure and...

Hi There,
Buffalo Arms has Sharps 40-70 Straight cases which
I believe will suffice for your needs.
Sharps 40-70 Straight
The other place to check "Track Of The Wolf" website
but they are out-of-stock of this cartridge at present.
Good Luck!

Re: 58 Roberts
Hi There, I was re-reading the George Layman's book on military rolling blocks and in the section on South Carolina "transformed" rifles, he lists the caliber as .58 Berdan. This may be a mistake but it is what is written there. Also, the example he shows is of the later (post August, 1870...

Re: 58 Roberts
Hi There, The French Government bought a lot of transformed rifles from Remington at the beginning of the Franco- Prussian war. Most of them were then sold as surplus to the Belgians and were re-barreled to 43 Spanish and sold mostly to South American countries as Spanish models (there was one of th...

Re: 58 Roberts
Hi There, The "transformed" rifles used what have been called the "type 1" action. These actions did not have a step where the barrel shank screwed into the frame and had the longer lower tang with an extra wood screw at the lower end. As mentioned, these actions were used to con...

Re: Help identifying rolling block
Hi There, You have what appears to be a Remington rolling block carbine with a type 2 action (meaning it has stepped sides and the bar type extractor and firing pin retaining screw in breach). The carbine model is fairly rare (less than 10% of the rolling block production were carbines). Have you de...

Re: Rolling Block #1 Barrel replacement
Hi There,
I noticed the OP decided to sell his rifle rather than
attempt having it re-barreled or re-lining the barrel.
It is currently up on GunBroker (Item # 866372153).
Good Luck!

Hi There,
Your last pic shows the typical New York State cartouche
showing this was one of the New York State Militia rifles.

Hi There,
You might remove the steel butt plate and see if
anything is stamped in the wood. Buffalo ordered
rifles of the same pattern used by N.Y. state but
in 45-70. These were stamped with "BCG" for
Buffalo City Guard.
Good Luck!

Re: Rolling Block #1 Barrel replacement
Hi There, Did Nock's barrels have the octagon section at the receiver, or simply a top flat? I've not seen any of Henry Nock's original barrels? I cannot say for sure myself. I was researching the correct spelling of knoxform and came across this tidbit from the British Arm Collectors' Association: ...

Re: Rolling Block #1 Barrel replacement
Hi There, I believe my barrel is original as it has the proper markings. It is my understanding that the Argentine 43 Spanish came with the Knox form barrel and I see them for sale all the time and I have the 43 Argentine. "Knox form" or "knoxform" is a misnomer. It should be Noc...

Re: Rolling Block #1 Barrel replacement
Hi There, I would say that a barrel that uses a rotary extractor would be best if you insist on getting a used barrel. Unfortunately, I don't think you will have much choice in caliber. I think you should consider getting a barrel blank in the caliber you desire and have it fitted to your action. 45...
