Re: Could this be Col. Bodine's Remington Creedmoor rifle ?

This looks like the rifle that showed up at one of the the original Great Western gun shows before it moved to the L A county fair grounds. Jay Lewis bought it. Jay got his money out first or I would have owned it. It had both heel & tang vernier long range rear sights as well as the original fr...

Re: Rolling block in caliber .38-50?

Remington announced their new offhand rifle would be ready for shipping in November 1879. It was available in 38-50 and 40-65. This was a rolling block rifle starting around ser # 8200 and can be seen in Roys book. They had announced the 40-65 would be available in June 1879 but no special models we...

Re: Report of Experiments, 1875

I believe I saw a paper showing some surplus trapdoor barrels made by Remington. Will see if I can find it. I would think the Remington barrels would have 5 lands & grooves. The late Jim Serven had some trapdoor barrels and the one I saw from him in Nebraska in the 1950's had 5 or 6 grooves. It ...

Re: New to the form question about 1894 doubles

Yes Brownmw, it is an ejector gun. Throws them about 10 feet and close together. I live in Texas but usually see Charles Semmers in Denver each May. Usually take up any new ones I do not think he has recorded. I believe mine is probably an early CE. 3 digit ser # under 200 on all the major parts tha...

Re: New to the form question about 1894 doubles

My CE ? double does not fit any of the doubles in Charlies book or any I have seen. The iron on forearm is engraved like a B grade. Remington Arms is stamped on sides of action like B but this is where B ends. Remington is framed in a double lined rectangle with scroll engraving on all four sides. A...

Re: New to the form question about 1894 doubles

I have a CE ? 12 no grade stamp, which has the wide shallow cut through the middle of the water table and is 1/16 inch narrower across the sides than my DE 12. Across the bolsters is the same width. 90 plus percent finish. Don't know if this is what you call a lite or not. This 2 barrel set made for...

Re: Engraved Rem No. 1 Single Barrel Rolling Block 16 Gauge?

Does any one know what this shotgun sold for? I missed this one. Some info I have found on them. The first ad I have knowledge of is the May 30, 1874 Army & Navy journal listing them for $55 to $80. In the 1874 Remington catalog they are listed at $55, $56, $70, $80, & $100. The $70 is engra...

Re: Date of manufacture for a Rolling Bloc Sporter No. 1 45-

ST on the receiver is uncommon. Mine has it under the small side plate that holds the 2 pins in place. These are the only 2 that have shown up so far with actions marked this way. Where is your ST on the receiver?

Re: Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers

I saw a rifle with that plaque many years ago. I do not remember if I was gathering information at that time. It was either at a gun show or an auction. A generic inscription and without a last name almost impossible to track down. As I remember, it was a nice rifle. Ed

Re: Date of manufacture for a Rolling Bloc Sporter No. 1 45-

I have in my files an original Remington flyer announcing the new offhand rifle to be shipped starting in November, 1879. These were to be in 38-50 and 40-65 calibers. These are very distinctive rifles. This is the first time I know of that Remington announced these calibers. Most people think they ...

Re: Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers

It is great that all numbers match. If you could show a picture of the plaque someone might have some knowledge of the persons involved. You may be right that it sat in stock someplace. Might also be a family rifle passed down or given to an employee. We may never know. Ed

Pull off your stock and look on the front and see if it is the same serial number as the rest. Also the butt plate should be numbered the same. Ed

Re: Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers

Your low 3000 ser number would likely have been made in 1874. We know of several low 3000 rifles with 1874 patent dates. Some of these rifles are creedmoor rifles that we know were used in the 1874 matches. When the stamp for the side patents came out Remington no longer used the 1874 stamp on the s...

Re: Remington Rolling Block serial# 1206

I think you have what we call a roundtop sporting rifle, however I would have to see it to tell for sure. Any chance of some pictures? Take off the forearm and tell me the numbers and any other marks on the bottom of barrel. Also if you can take off the butt stock there are numbers on both the left ...
