Can someone tell me what the function is of the 'locking block' that is on the left side of the Model 11 receiver? It is a pre model 11 called Remington Autoloading Shotgun.. Somewhere on this site you can date it, but off the top of my head I would say it was made in '08 or '09.

In the Model 17 and the Ithaca model 37, the hammer follows the bolt as it closes if you hold the trigger back. I have seen the posts that state that there is no buffer in the pre model 11 guns and am not sure that this is correct. I have a 1910 Remington Autoloading shotgun and it has a buffer at the back of the receiver. It appears that it was fastened by some sort of adhesive as I see no evidence of rivets.
