Re: Gun history

What you have is known to collectors as the 1863 New Model Army. It was very widely used during and after the war. With your serial number I think it was made after the war. The piece would not have been plated for military use but many were civilian models. Clint Eastwood often used them in his wes...

Civil War Weapons Search letter

Saw an 1863 New Model Army at an antique store with a letter from this group. It indicated that the piece had been issued to an Ohio company. Does anyone know about this group? Do they have good information? My pistol s/n 96509 is an US piece and I'd like to know its history if it's available. Thanks.

Re: Mystery Rolling Block

As to the Enfield reference: My 1862 Tower has a different profile at the wrist. However, the pin through the stock under the rear sight is the same and the fore-end cap looks similar. Also, the rear sight looks like a reversed Enfield. The Enfield even has the 1-2-3 on the side.

Re: Remington Model 1861 Army, serial 10590, cartouche ?

According to the Proofhouse web page http://proofhouse.com/cm/us_inspector.htm there was a FTB, name unknown, who inspected 1860 Colt Armys. Correct time period but wrong company. Maybe he was loaned to Remington for a while.

Re: Army 44 Conversion

This is a conversion you can do with a hacksaw and drill. The pictures show my conversion of a Pocket Navy from the rear and a real conversion done back in the 1800s from the side. Using a hacksaw you can see the cylinder was cut into just in front of the nipples but being careful to leave the notch...

Re: Lever-rolling block

This is the conversion I did. The barrel and stock were from Numrich Arms in .45-70. The action cost about $8 from Hunter's Lodge in Alexandria, Virginia in 1967.

Re: Rolling block with a wiping stick???

Please don't use a dowel as a wiping stick or ram rod. It will splinter if stressed and long, sharp pieces will go into your hand.

All of the old gun places like Dixie Arms carry hickory ramrods which are flexible and strong.

Re: New (or old) model 1858 Beals Patent help

Here is a web page for a Lanz holster. http://www.cwslagleantiques.com/view_detail.cfm?catid=75&id=3172 Also, "Old Model" serial numbers ran from about 3,000-19,000 while "New Models" ran from 15,000 to 147,000. Beals models had the barrel threads hidded in front of the cylin...

lever action rb project

In 1966 I bought an Egyptian RB barreled action from Hunter's Lodge in Alexandria, Va for $7.50. The barrel was worthless but Numrich Arms was selling .45-70 buffalo rifle conversion kits for about $40 so I got one. It had the barrel, stock parts and the buttplate and was an easy assembly. Too easy....

Did I ask the question incorrectly? It seems that others have received an estimate of the manufacture data. Thanks.

new model army serial number

My 1863 New Model Army has the s/n 96503. Are there any records of it? It has a number of inspectors' initials and the Ainsworth cartouche. Thanks. John Hamilton
