Re: Rem.1882 SxS Hammer

For the record, resizing photos is pretty trivial. If you don't have or want to pay for photoshop, GIMP will do it for free.

Re: What Model is this and would barrel inserts make it safe?

I'm fairly new to this, but it seems from the Remington library history page: http://www.remington.com/library/histor ... l_1889.asp that 1889's had serial numbers from 30,000 to 105,000 and 200,000 to 260,000. This would fit in the first category - evidently made before 1900.

Re: Help: need to identify Double Barrel Shotgun

No problem. I always find it interesting to learn something new. I'm certainly no expert, but I would have thought you'd have seen "Remington Arms" on top of the barrels if it was a Remington. Thanks for the photos - good shots.

Re: DOM Model 1889

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the markings on the gun an indication of whether it was designed for smokeless powder? If so, given that the smokeless powders of the time were vastly different from today, might not a modern 'black powder replacement' like Pyrodex be the most appropr...

Re: Dating My 1894 sxs Damascus Shotgun serial 102257?

I'm certainly not that knowledgable, but I have done a bit of reading and searching on the internet - I was under the impression that anything after about 1880 was set up to use modern, smokeless powder rather than black powder. I'm sure some more knowledgable person will correct if I'm wrong in that.

Re: More on 1889

I'm looking at the Hodgdon online manual and I don't see any 2-5/8" loads - so what do I do now?

Re: More on 1889

What advice can you give me concerning loads for shooting this particular gun. I don't plan on doing a lot, but I'd like to demonstrate that it is shootable. The story is that I've taken custody of my father-in-law's gun collection and I'm basically wanting to shoot eveything that is shootable - jus...

More on 1889

Tried to get pictures, but not enough sunlight to get decent closeups. At any rate, I've done a couple of things - first, I got a chamber gauge - it shows quite clearly that the chamber is less than 2-3/4" - as close as I can measure, it's 2-11/16". I've attempted to measure the forcing co...

Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.

Thanks Jay. I'm attempting, at this point, to ascertain whether it is really chambered for 2-5/8" - which seems likely. I have ordered a chamber gauge from Brownells - will see what that says before I do anything. I'm looking at the possibility of handloading - and trimming to 2-5/8" if th...

Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.

I have attempted to contact the most knowledgeable gunsmith in town. He is out of town for two weeks having a medical procedure which will take him out of action for a month or two. I have ascertained: barrels are not Damascus; the gun will chamber a 2-3/4" shell. Any further advice on how to p...

Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.

Barrels are not damascus. I have the name of a gunsmith - will check with him in the coming week. Barrels appear in excellent condition.

Help on 1889 12 ga.

I'm not experienced with guns, but I have several friends who are. I recently took custody of my father in law's collection (he died about 10 years ago). In the collection is a Remington double barrel shotgun. I assume from the serial number (216xxx) that it must be a model 1899. This gun has been l...
