I too have a Remington nickel PA32XXX, sure looks factory to me as there is no trace of plating over wear (internal or external). Is there any record of the ability to order a custom M 51 with such a finish?

That is not a "sun mark", Ed Buffaloe's article on the Remington clearly shows what they look like. The caliber marking came out when the Remington Trademark logo stamping did in 1921 or so. This looks to be a "lunchbox special" from who knows when other than 1918, 1919 or 1920 b...

Yours is a second year production run according to the 1979 Gun Digest. If I get some time I will post the numbers.
