Re: Is my Hepburn a Remington?
No worries. Any excuse to go hide in the garage for a while is fine with me. I enjoy it. Lower tang serial is the same size and orientation, the only difference being mine is about 3/32" further to the rear. That variation seems reasonable. Upper tang inside appears to be the same size and loca...

Here you go:
Left hand side, front to back, along the bottom of the receiver:
0.1461, 0.1450 (where patent stamp is), 0.1442
Same, right hand side:
0.1462, 0.1458, 0.1450

Re: Is my Hepburn a Remington?
Wow. You'll have to give me a few days to get mine disassembled and measured. I'll also post some pics of my wood where the numbers are, for reference.

Re: Is my Hepburn a Remington?
The Hepburn and patent date on my rifle is very shallow and would certainly disappear if the receiver were refinished. One explanation for yours would be a refinish. For kicks, can you measure the receiver thickness along the bottom center (where the stamp would have been) to the thousandth of an in...

Absolutely beautiful Vall!!
Very nice job, and hopefully you get her shooting as good as she looks.

Re: Roller Wish For Remington Arms
Vall,
That's the first roller I've seen with the fabled special order feature: "floats in mid-air" That must have been at least a $10 option back in the day
Nice colors, by the way. It looks like you're getting close!

Hepburn Chambered for "32 . 2 1/8"
That is the original marking on the underside of the barrel. So, my question is simple...what is it? I've read about the .32-30 and .32-40 Remington cartridges, and I assume some Hepburns were chambered for the more common 32-40 Ballard/Winchester round? Any ideas which of these I have? This is more...

Re: Lever-rolling block
I don't have any info but I'd sure like to see some pictures. I do remember seeing a picture somewhere of a modified roller with either a lever or a side-lever...I'll have to look throught my stuff. I think it was an auctioned Schuetzen rifle sometime in the past few years, which certainly would hav...

Re: Hepburn or Rolling Block Sights - Questions
The Book "Old Gunsights" by Nick Strobel has some information on your sights. Also contact Lonestar Rifle Company (They make reproduction of Remington single shots) Thank you for the input. I have subsequently bought the recommended book and have found it very useful. I will eventually lo...

Re: Hepburn or Rolling Block Sights - Questions
Vall, Thanks again! Interesting about the Marlin and Remmy sights. I guess it makes it a bit easier to find replacements. On the Hepburn I originally posted about, I ended up finding a 1911 patent King folding leaf sight with the proper dovetail (taken off of an early Remington M12). Although a bit ...

Re: Finally...Remington No. 1 Sporter
Thanks Vall! It's always a pleasure hearing from you. Too bad about the sight but it was clearly not anything vintage. I do have a nice original mid-range Remmy sight on my Hepburn I suppose I could switch back and forth whenever I shoot.

Finally...Remington No. 1 Sporter
I have been searching for a buffalo gun for a lot of years. I wanted an original rifle from the correct time period (1871 ~ 1880), in a commonly used configuration. Sharps are VERY expensive, so I set my sights on Rollers. I have been seeking an original condition No. 1 Sporter for a few years now -...

Re: Remington #3 Hepburn
I'm sorry for your loss. I don't know much about the Hepburns yet and I don't know what information you are after, but you may do well to post some specific questions on the ASSRS forum if you haven't already: http://www.assra.com/cgi-bin/yabb/yabb.pl But I do know that is a beautiful rifle and you ...

Re: Born-again 721 Meets Mulie
SuperTodd - I've been looking at those rifles with interest for a while - they are GREAT looking rifles, IMO. I hope yours shoots as good as it looks, but I'm sure it will. The 264 is a great round for western hunting all the way to elk. My rifle (at least in it's old skin) has taken many elk, antel...
