Re: #1 1/2 or Not Again--Take a Gander

Not a #1 1/2, as it's got the rebated receiver. A 1 1/2 has a flat sided receiver, and as you mentioned not the longer lower tang. Before the #1 1/2 came out the .32 RF would have been on the #1, but later only on the #1 1/2. That one might go cheap in the .32 RF caliber, regardless of whether it wa...

Re: Lower Tang Length on #1 Sporter

Yes, and no. The top rifle is the #1 1/2, bottom is the #1. In the second picture they are left to right: #1, #1 1/2, #2, #3, and #4.
I've always wondered where he got those measurements. I've not seen a ton of #1 Sporters, but all I have measured were 1.24-1.25" wide.

Re: Rolling Block No.2 in 44-40

Sounds like it's been rebored to .44-40 and probably because it had a worn out .38 cal. bore. That blank is about as nice a fit as I've ever seen. Most likely it had a tang sight at one time, so the rear dovetail was filled. I don't know what to say about the notch in the receiver top? I can't ever ...

Re: Lower Tang Length on #1 Sporter

Thought you had a #1 Sporter Yellowhouse? If you measure the receiver you'll find it probably is very close to 1.24" width. Mine measures 1.245" wide. As for #1 1/2's having long lower tangs, DeHaas was smokin something that day! The 1 1/2 Roller has equal length tangs that are both the sa...

Re: Rolling Block No.2 in 44-40

The figure of 1,000 made is of course incorrect as you assumed. John Gyde says the highest number known is 42801, and he figures there were at least that many made. The .44-40 is probably the rarest of calibers in the #2 and from what I've seen they get a pretty good premium. Your picture looks like...

Re: Rolling Block No.1 sporter

Curious about one thing. Is your barrel marked on the top flat E. Remington or Remington Arms? And Marlinman93 practically stole that rifle  but when you find a deal like that you gotta do what you do. :) I've only seen 3-4 sporters in gunshows the last 20 years and two of those were rimfires...

Re: Rolling Block No.1 sporter

Pretty hard to estimate a value without any info, or pictures. Caliber is easy! Just cast the chamber with Cerrosafe and then take measurements. Brownells sells it, and instructions on how to use it. If you can send me good pictures, I'll see if I can assist. I bought one marked ".44S" whi...

Re: Rolling Block No.1 sporter

Most of that info is generic to both the #1 and #1 1/2, except the last thing! The longer lower tang clinches it as a #1 Sporter. #1 military, and all other sporting models did not have the longer lower tang. You've got a great old Rem. #1 alright!

Re: Rolling Block No.1 sporter

Look just in front of the forearm on the bottom flat for the caliber marking. 26" is an unusually short barrel for a #1 Sporter, but could be factory special order. Measure the thickness of the receiver side to side with dial calipers and post the measurement here. Not huge differences between ...

Re: Finally...Remington No. 1 Sporter

I'm beginning a build up of another #1 Sporting Rifle from an original action. I plan to put a 34" barrel and chamber it in .40-65, with 1-16" twist. I've got a Lee Shaver long range soule tang coming for it, but I'll use it on my Hepburn until the Roller is done.-Vall

Re: Lever-rolling block

Most I've seen were side levers, but I have seen one done recently that used an underlever.

Re: Lever-rolling block

There have been a number of sidelever conversions on the old Rolling Block large framed rifles over the years. I don't know of any factory conversions to sidelever, but maybe one of the folks who have more contact with the factory, or early Rolling Block designs might know.

Re: Help with roller from a newbie

You should probably do a chamber cast, as I could guess, but it will still need to be confirmed by a casting. Possibly 12.17x44R, which is the closest Scandinavian caliber to .50-70 that I know of.-Vall
